The Short Films That Were Made Into Feature-Length Movies

Making and distributing a short film is relatively less expensive than making a feature film, and sometimes it’s a director’s ticket to stardom in Hollywood. Here are some short film that i like it so much and it were made into feature length movies.

SHORT: MAMA / FEATURE: MAMA

When Argentinian director Andrés Muschietti and his sister and co-writer Bárbara Muschietti released the short film Mama in 2008, it quickly caught the eye of filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, who agreed to produce and finance a feature version. Both films followed two very young sisters named Victoria and Lilly who were abandoned in a cabin in the woods.

Although they were thought of as missing or dead, the sisters were found five years later, as it was revealed a mysterious ghost—which they affectionately called “Mama”—was raising the pair. The feature version expanded Victoria and Lilly’s backstory and psychosis, while it also added new characters, including the sisters’ uncle, played by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who adopts the girls once they’re found, and his girlfriend, played by Jessica Chastain, who becomes close with Victoria and Lilly.

Another Example –

SHORT: 9 / FEATURE: 9

in 2005, film student Shane Acker created the short film 9 as his thesis film at the UCLA Animation Workshop. The 11-minute short, which follows a group of ragdolls that try to survive in a post-apocalyptic world, caught the eye of director Tim Burton, who wanted Acker to make a feature film based on the short. In 2009, 9 was released on September 9 with a refined look and an all-star voice cast including Elijah Wood, Jennifer Connelly, and John C. Reilly. Although the short film was showered with awards, the feature film version of 9 failed to resonate with critics and general audiences alike.

Marigolds by Stephanie Zari

Watched this Short Film last night . This is what in my mind after watched this short film .A superb film, beautify shot and the acting amazing, especially the mum. Little confused as to what the mum was doing? Was it a story about a husband and wife that have lost their love for each other, OR? Was it the mum fancied her own son, that’s hard watching, very odd?
So , this is what i get from Director(Stephanie Zari)
“These sorts of ‘family taboo’ topics and stories are hard to tackle, but I’m interested in peaking behind the closed doors of ‘normality’…a lot of women we auditioned for the main role said the story and role really made them think about their own marriages. Jane Guernier our actress was cast for the sadness and humanity she brought to the character”

Marigolds explores what goes on behind ‘closed doors’ of a seemingly normal family, living in a sleepy village. It exposes the fragile state of a 25-year lifeless and dull marriage, and in particular, the effect this has had on the state of mind of the mother.

Susannah is living a typically quiet and dusty life in the suburbs with her husband Paul, when an unexpected visit from her son, Piers, surfaces a dark secret that has been brewing since he left the nest 15 years ago. As Susannah struggles to come to terms with Piers’ relationship with his new girlfriend, her typical mediocre existence is slowly stripped away to reveal an obsession that is anything but typical… or secret.

‘Marigolds’ achieved festival and critical success, screening at over 15 festivals including the London Short Film Festival, Cambridge Film Festival and Underwire as well as several US festivals. It received rave reviews in both Little White Lies and Best for Film. Marigolds was acquired and broadcast by the BBC and aired on the final episode of BBC HD Shorts in March 2012. She was also honoured to receive the Best Director award for Marigolds at Underwire Film Festival.

Anyway, thought it was brilliant and a most enjoyable watch. Well done to everyone involved, great stuff!

A Short film?

A Short film can be either subjective or objective but is usually subjective as a result of the length of the film, tends to be single stranded with an open ending such as in the film Sold where he doesn’t buy what he wants but he gains something that can lead to what he would like and this is where the film ends.

Themes: the short film genre can cover any number of genres in the same way a full length feature does, but due to the length of the film it has to be much more obvious to the viewer, themes include social realism, the rom com, community, crime and vigalantism, immagration, family, segregation and war.

Style and Genre: the style of the short film usually differs from that oof the full length films, the main reason is usually the budget, for example it is common in short films to see kinetic movement with the camera, due to the camera not having tracks to run across whilst moving. it uses relativly unknown actors as the famous hollywood stars cant be coaxed in to working for such low budget films. the directors are usually unknown and they tend to be making short films in the hope of getting a big break for a larger hollywood film with a big budget. A notable style in short films is the open ended storyline. A style which is not common with the genre is a special effects one but in the film Alive in Joburg we see a very good use of special effects, which lead the director to be given the job of directing the hollywood blocbuster dfistrict 9.

Cinematography: the cinematography of short films usually involves kinetic movement of the camera, very basic camera shots, breaking the 4th wall, which is when a charecter speaks to the camera, the use of high key lighting, using documentary style filming and can sometimes be gritty due to he low budget.

Sound: can sometimes have a score playing throughout the entire length of the film, sometimes uses a voiceover in the film rather then any asynchronous diagetic sound,

Editing: usually uses a linear style editing, still keeps to the hollywood style, usually made in real time, not many cuts from one location to another, due to both budget and length of the film, uses the documentary style, use of slow mo occasionally, can sometimes use visual flashbacks.

Titles: tend to be very minimal and only really appear at the end with a short credit of the cast director and any ther key members.

In order to create anything , you must do research .When creating a film , no matter what it is about , you must have research , so that everything is correct .I am beginning to get more interest research on creating films, and I get the sense that.

Last few days ,i have keep thinking when i know that we have to choose an research topic.

I have think that what about film production that i wish to know but i’m still don’t know?
I’m lost with it .I totally have no idea what topic i should choose.Until i met Mr Mark , He have been asking me few question .

-What you have been done in your Final Year Project ?
Me:Video
-What categories it is ?
Me:Suspense (Thriller)
-Why you choose to do that as your Final Year Project ?
Me:Because i’m interest on production
-Does Suspense (Thriller) type of movie will getting more viewer in cinema ? or another type of movie like LOve , Horror movie ?
Me:hmmm…..
-Are you think that Short Film on network can have more viewer then the movie in cinema ?
Me:……….

OH ! Finally i get to know what i wish to know about it.
There are the different between feature film and short film.

First,
Where is the film going to be shown?
Your reasons for making the film should also relate to where the film is going to be shown. You could be making it for:
Your front room – many filmmakers start out by testing their ideas on family and friends.
A showreel – maybe you’re building a body of work to prove to others that you have filmmaking skills and/or to persuade them to give you some funding to make another film.
The Internet – a great means of getting your work out there and getting feedback from a wide range of people, internationally.
Television – if your film is of a high quality, a television channel may screen it, especially if it fits into a slot with other short films.
The cinema – one of the hardest places to get a short film screened, but some very successful shorts have been shown before feature films on general release. Some cinemas also run short film events.
Festivals – a great opportunity to get your film on the big screen, watched by an audience of industry people and by filmmaking peers.

The answers to ‘why’ and ‘where’ determine the standard you need to work to – there is a minimum standard of technical quality required for broadcast on television and a very different quality for transfer from tape to film.
Why you are making a short film, and where you want it to go, will determine what you shoot on, which equipment you use, budgets, crew numbers and potential markets. You and your team’s objectives set the parameters of what you are going to create. Be clear about these objectives and then crack on with the project.

There are small pots of money available to help create short films – especially those on digital formats. The industry is also full of people who are willing to do work at reduced rates because they like an idea, they like someone involved with the project or they simply remember what it was like to start out in filmmaking. They might also help because they think it would be good experience for their staff or their showreel.

ShortFilm_When Night Falls

1897766_491976900925250_5096358107397527190_n“When Night Falls” is a story about a metamorphosis genius who planned a kidnap scheme which is triggered by just start from a simple lie.
The intention of “When Night Falls” short film is let audiences into meditation once a lie has been told, there can be two alternative consequences, it may be discovered or remain undiscovered.

A person who claims they never to have made up a little story to get them out of a difficult social moment turns out to be the biggest liar of all. In fact, everybody lies.
According to findings, human begin lying around age 4-5, when children gain an awareness of the use and power of language. Nearly everyone will tell that lying is wrong, lying is terrible. However, when it comes to avoiding trouble, to protect them, gain financially or socially, or even sparing someone’s feelings, many people find themselves doing it anyway.
People find themselves lying anyway just to protect themselves or others, but somehow they lost sights of the effect of lie. Lying often impels someone to continue their deceptions, or find they perpetrating more untruths to cover themselves, or it even leads to terrible consequences. Once a lie has been told, there can be two alternative consequences, it may be discovered or remain undiscovered.
We intended to deliver and convey this message and thoughts about lie, which it stimulates contemplation and stir up feelings of the audiences, to also lead them into ponder and meditation about lie.
Hence, in order to convey the message in an efficient and effective manner, we decided to turn the exertion of our imagination and conception into a short film.

While ,my position in my team “Muldiox Production” when creating this short film was be an assistant director , as while as location manager .
Before the shoot, my main task is to create the filming schedule, working in careful consultation with the director in order to fulfill his or her creative ambitions. When s up the shooting schedule, in the same time, I also have to be aware of budgetary constraints, cast availability and script coverage. Preparing the storyboard, overseeing the hiring of locations, props and equipment, and checking weather reports, are all key pre-production duties for me.
During production, I’m also have to ensure that everyone is on standby and ready for the director’s cue for action ,and keep filming on schedule by driving it forward, so they frequently make announcements and give directions to coordinate the cast and crew. Besides, I also have to prepare the daily ‘call sheet’ for all our team (a document detailing daily shooting logistics, which is distributed to all cast and crew). As an assistant director in team, I have responsible for health and safety on set or location, and must take action to eliminate or minimize hazards at all time.

Producing a film requires the talents and abilities of production team. It is important for each production crew to understand their roles and responsibilities in the team in order to produce a successful film.Working as a team requires a lot of team spirits and communication. Each of us came with different personalities; we have our own thoughts and ideas regarding the film. Therefore, being an excellent communicator, with tact and diplomacy skills, is also essential as we must routinely deal with problem or even crisis situations.
In addition, I gained knowledge and technical skills about creating perfect lightings. Furthermore, time management is another lesson learnt. Time management keeps me on track and also helps to discipline ourselves.
To conclude, there must have considerable a lot experience as an assistant director and this time here have a good experience for me to take part in this position. Filmmaking is a crew effort. One cannot be an expert in everything. Many stages are involved to complete a filmmaking before releasing it to the consumer media.
Team spirit thus plays an important role for this film to reach the completion of the production phase.
I am blessed with crew members who are cooperative and determined to make this film a success.

Screen-Shot-2014-01-17-at-7.20.14-PM

I had not read the books before going to watched this movie, but I have to say that ,the movie stands on its own. I now intend to read the books based on the movie but people need to remember that books will never be exactly like the movie. They are their own version of the story and both can be equally great. As for the movie, I was excited to see what happened to Tris and Four and I was never bored. There were fast paced parts for the action sequences and slower paced parts to tell the story. I thoroughly enjoyed watching and would watch again, with or without the book. If you liked the Hunger Games, this one is much faster paced so I highly recommend it if you are enjoy a futuristic thriller or just a good love story wrapped in action sequences.

Based on the popular series of young adult novels by Veronica Roth, “Divergent” stars the incomparable Shailene Woodley as Tris, a 16-year-old girl living in post-apocalyptic Chicago. Although we never find out what precipitated the war that seemed to wipe out most of civilization and rendered the Windy City a disintegrating, heavily-fortified, dystopian third-world metropolis, I suspect it happened minutes after the Cubs won the World Series. (In science fiction, anything is possible.)

As Tris explains in her opening voice-over, society has been divided into five factions: Dauntless, for the brave; Erudite, the smart ones; the honest Candor faction; Amity, fostering peace; and Abnegation, for the selfless, the faction into which Tris was born. The system is designed to foster peace, but we’ll see about that. Unlike “The Hunger Games,” where you have the Reaping — two children are picked from each district to fight to the death for the amusement of others — the stakes aren’t as high here. Instead, when teens come of age, they’re tested to determine which faction will be best for them — the one in which they were born, or a different one.

Whatever their choice, the test doesn’t lie. And Tris’s results confirm what she’s always suspected: she doesn’t fit any particular category. She’s Divergent — and the society’s leaders, most notably Erudite, consider Divergents a threat to the system.

Even though it stretches to nearly two-and-a-half hours and concludes with an extended gun battle, by the time “Divergent” ends, it still seems to be in the process of clearing its throat. Blame it on burdensome commercial expectations, perhaps: Adapted from the first novel in Veronica Roth’s blockbuster YA series, this film has clearly been designated an heir apparent to Summit-Lionsgate’s massively lucrative teen-targeted “Twilight” and “Hunger Games” properties. Yet director Neil Burger seems so concerned with laying franchise groundwork that he neglects to create an engaging standalone movie, and “Divergent’s” uncertain sense of setting, bloated plot, drab visual style and solid yet underwhelming lead turns from Shailene Woodley and Theo James don’t necessarily make the best case for series newcomers. Fans of the books will turn out for what should be a very profitable opening weekend, but with future installments already on the release calendar, the film’s B.O. tea leaves will surely be read with care.
